Depreciation

Yes, we all know how fun it is to walk onto an automotive lot and pick out a brand new car for yourself.  But in fact, from the dazzling glitter of that fresh paint job to the heady smell of a new car, what you’re really paying for is the metaphorical sizzle, not the steak.  The sad fact is that just as soon as you drive that car off the lot, it will lose as much as 40% of its value.  Why?  There are several reasons.  First, there’s a big difference, if you’re a potential buyer, between a car with 20 miles on its odometer and a car with 0 miles.  If these two cars were both the same price, which would you buy?  Thus, dealers have to must barely-used cars down to get people to buy them.  But that’s not all.  Drive a car for a day and return it, and any other potential buyers are going to be wondering why.  Is the car a lemon?  No one wants to get saddled with a car that doesn’t work, so others will probably steer clear of that model of car.

Does it work?

And that same factor also plays into why you should go used instead of new when purchasing a car.  Walk onto a car lot, take a look at the newest models, and all you’re going to hear from the salesman is how wonderful these cars are.  But how do you know it’s true?  When you buy used, you protect yourself from buying a substandard car, because you can do research and see what previous owners have thought.  With a new model of car fresh off the assembly line, that’s not an option.

The Economy

Lastly, with the economy in the shape it’s in right now, the last thing you need is $20,000 of debt sitting on your credit report.  How do you know you won’t lose your job tomorrow?  So, for all these reasons, I urge you to buy used cars.

Becoming an auto mechanicMost high school students think that enrolling in a four-year college or university is the best way to find a good job that pays well.  However, they should consider going to a technical school or a community college with an automotive technician program.

First of all, automotive programs are usually only two years and can be only one year if a student has credit from a high school program.  Second, the cost of attending a technical school or community college is a fraction of what a student will pay at even the cheapest universities.  Third, when the student graduates, he or she will know that they have a career waiting for them.
Automotive technicians are in such high demand precisely because so few high school students enroll in auto technology programs.  Many college students major in something very general like business administration or English, and neither of these majors have a clear career path and thus students have a hard time finding an entry-level job.  Also, if a student does find an entry level job, it is very low paying and does not have much room for upward mobility.

An automotive technician, on the other hand, has a career set up for him or her, is in high demand, and can make as much as six figures with the right experience.  An automotive technician may be involved in hands on work when beginning his or her career, but by the end he or she should have moved up to a supervisor position.  Once an automotive technician is a supervisor, he or she does not do hands on work and simply diagnoses the problems and tells someone else how to handle it.  Also, supervisors at moderate to large shops nearly all make six figures or near that.

Therefore, instead of going the same old route to an expensive four year college, where you probably will not have a job waiting for you, consider enrolling in an automotive technical program where you can make good money and go to school for half the time.

1205696_3dmoneyWhen the time comes to buy a new vehicle it is exciting yet something we dread at the same time.  It is nice to get behind the wheel of a new car, but we aren’t too thrilled about coughing up the money for it.  A new car usually means expensive, and just a higher bill added onto the ones we already have.  Although, it doesn’t have to mean that!  Buying a car can be something that is affordable to you if you consider a few of these tips.

Buy used – First of all, you should always buy a vehicle that is used.  Buying used will save you so much money right now, and down the road.  Simply because once the vehicle is driven off the lot, you already lost a great amount of money.

Online – Try buying your vehicle through research you’ve done online.  Check out websites like ebay, Craigslist, Yahoo autos, etc.  These websites will allow you to find out information on vehicles that are for sale without having to go look at them.  You can find a good price range for yourself, and you will most likely find your best deals online.

Kelley blue book – Kelley blue book is a great way to find out whether or not you’re getting a good deal.  This will tell you what any car is worth simply through the features, year, condition, and make of your vehicle.  So, if you think you’ve found a great deal, make sure you kelley blue book it first.

Negotiate – Don’t ever be afraid to negotiate a price.  If the seller really wants to get rid of it, they won’t mind cutting away from of the money they’re asking for.  If you don’t like something about the vehicle, ask for money off because of it.

Buying a used car is a great way to buy a car for a great price.  Consider some of the tips above, and you will be in the hands of a new vehicle in no time.  Just never settle for more than you think it’s worth!

When people think of sports cars from the 80s, what comes to most people’s minds is Magnum’s Ferrari 308 (Magnum PI) or Crockett’s Ferrari Testarossa (Miami Vice).  However, Toyota, Honda and Pontiac all produce sporty cars for the masses. All were mass marketed and sold for less than $16,000 in 1980s money.

Toyota MR2

The Toyota MR2 was introduced in 1985 and was a mid-engine, 4 cylinder, 2-seater that became very popular due to its reliability and high-revving, engine.  Pop-up headlamps were standard and several options appeared including a T-roof and a supercharged edition.

Honda CRX SI

The Honda CRX first arrived in 1985 as a 2+2.  The CRX’s engine was located in the front of the car and was the only three of these cars to be front wheel drive.  The CRX also scored highly with consumers on fun factor due to a high output 4 cylinder engine that was extremely reliable.

Pontiac Fiero GT

The Pontiac Fiero arrived in the US in 1983 as a 1984 model.  The car was a 2 seater and initially was only sold as a 4-cylinder model.  GM hoped the Fiero would revitalize the Pontiac brand, which some felt had become stale from the consumer’s perspective.  The Fiero GT, introduced in 1985, came with a standard V6 engine.  Eventually a T-roof and a better suspension were introduced.

All three cars are no longer in production, but all retain a cult following of enthusiasts and many clubs exist supporting owners with parts and events to show off their cars.
