Cheap and Affordable 80s Sports Cars

When people think of sports cars from the 80s, what comes to most people’s minds is Magnum’s Ferrari 308 (Magnum PI) or Crockett’s Ferrari Testarossa (Miami Vice). However, Toyota, Honda and Pontiac all produce sporty cars for the masses. All were mass marketed and sold for less than $16,000 in 1980s money.
Toyota MR2
The Toyota MR2 was introduced in 1985 and was a mid-engine, 4 cylinder, 2-seater that became very popular due to its reliability and high-revving, engine. Pop-up headlamps were standard and several options appeared including a T-roof and a supercharged edition.
Honda CRX SI
The Honda CRX first arrived in 1985 as a 2+2. The CRX’s engine was located in the front of the car and was the only three of these cars to be front wheel drive. The CRX also scored highly with consumers on fun factor due to a high output 4 cylinder engine that was extremely reliable.
Pontiac Fiero GT
The Pontiac Fiero arrived in the US in 1983 as a 1984 model. The car was a 2 seater and initially was only sold as a 4-cylinder model. GM hoped the Fiero would revitalize the Pontiac brand, which some felt had become stale from the consumer’s perspective. The Fiero GT, introduced in 1985, came with a standard V6 engine. Eventually a T-roof and a better suspension were introduced.
All three cars are no longer in production, but all retain a cult following of enthusiasts and many clubs exist supporting owners with parts and events to show off their cars.
