No matter how old you are today, you’re going to get to that point in life where you can’t drive anymore.  Many of us don’t want to admit but there are so many elderly people out there today that refuse to stop driving.  Yes, it’s selfish but sometimes, it comes down to the fault of their own children.

You grew up in an household where Mom and Dad were boss.  They told you what to do, when to be come, etc, so when it comes down to telling your older parents that they can’t drive anymore, you feel that you don’t have the right.  If you feel that your parents can’t drive anymore, there are many things that you can do in order to stop them from starting up that car and endangering many other innocent people on the road.  You won’t want to wake up one morning and find out that your Mom or Dad have killed an innocent family because of their own selfishness.

I put together a little list of things you can say or do in order to help get your parents off the road.  Some of them may work while others may not.

Offer to drive them places:  If you live nearby, you can offer to them that you’re willing to drive them to certain places.  Pick out certain days of the week that you’re willing to take them to doctor appointments, the grocery store and more.

Simply talk to them:  Some kids don’t even want to talk to their parents.  Instead, they insist that they can do whatever they want.  Instead of doing that, sit down with them, give them stats and ask them what they can work on so that they don’t drive anymore.  Even if it means moving them to an assisted living home.  Do everything in your own power to get them off the road if you feel they are a threat.

Look at bus / taxi schedules:  If your parents live in a metro area with a bus or subway, etc.  Check and see if it’s a safe place to ride and take them on a trip here and there and see if they like it.  Show them that the bus takes them to particular points and they won’t have to waste the gas nor will they have to drive.  If you have to, offer to pay for an annual or monthly pass just in case they bring up the money part.

Look at senior transportation services:  Every major city has some sort of senior citizen transportation services.  See what kind of services are in your area.  Explore them and ask what kind of rates that they charge.  You may find that they are more reasonable than you would imagine.

It’s never easy telling someone its time to stop driving but deep down, you have to know that by what you are doing, you’re doing right.  You’re saving not only your parents lives but others as well.  Try some of the tips above and see if they work for you and your family.
