Everyone in life has to probably buy a car sometime in their life. Whether it’s brand new or used, there are a few things that you should know before you go ahead and fork over your money. Today, let’s take a gander at what you should know about used cars.
Used cars are quite different than a new car because you’re buying from another owner. You’ll have no idea where it’s been, what it’s been through or how the old owner has driven it. Remember that an owner is going to say anything to get it off his/her hands.
Here are some things that you should look at before you go out and purchase that brand new “used” car:
Always get a mechanical check: Before you go out and purchase that car, make sure that you bring someone along that knows a lot about cars. Take it for a test drive, check the oil, check the body and most importantly, ask questions about things that don’t seem right. A good owner will tell you any flaws that the car may have.
Closely inspect the body: As I already mentioned, you’ll want to check out the body of the car. Make sure that you open up the doors and check inside the frame to make sure there’s no rust forming. Even the slightest sign of rust can spell troubles because it tends to spread fast. Also, check the interior for damage as well. You may find that smokers drop their cigarettes a lot and leave burn marks on the car seats.
Is it priced right? Just like a home, you’ll want to compare this car to many other cars on the market. You’ll want the market to determine the price of the car you’re buying. If it’s priced too high, see if the owner will come down in their pricing. If it’s been on the market for a long time, you’ll find that they most likely will.
Run an AutoCheck report: Everything may look good on paper and the owner may seem really nice but to play it safe, I would recommend that you get an AutoCheck report. This report is going to see if there was any reported damages or claims on the vehicle in the past. This will save you a fortune if you find out that the car was in a wreck that you didn’t know about.
These are the main tips that you should follow when you want to purchase a used car. It’s always best to play it safe when it comes to buying. Ask questions, inspect the car and buy a report. All of this effort can save you a lot of money, just in case you do purchase that car that wasn’t what you thought it would be.
