Catalytic Converters were first introduced to us about thirty years ago as a means of help with our emission problems.  Our cars put out a lot of pollution and in order to control this problem mandating how much a vehicle could put out was initiated by many states. Since emission levels were now being regulated in order to control the amount of pollutants that our vehicles could put into the atmosphere catalytic converters were being installed in all vehicles. The federal government determined that the only way to make auto manufacturers comply with the clean air act was to require them to start making engines that would no longer cause this problem.

Auto manufacturers did not want to change how the engine operated believing that it would be too costly so they come up with the idea of a catalytic converter. The technology being used in internal combustion engines was too dirty causing pollutants into our earth. The engines were not only harming the earth but burned a lot more fuel. The cost effective catalytic converter not only help society in getting rid of pollutants but cut down on the cost of gasoline.

The idea behind the catalytic converter was to chemically change the leftover emissions into less-destructive compounds. The consumer soon learned that not only were the pollutants being transformed but the use of gas was being cut down. It seems with the action of the catalytic converter that many vehicles were now able to travel more efficiently using less fuel. The idea soon caught on by many and it wasn’t long before everyone expected their vehicle to have a catalytic converter.

The installation soon became very popular until the refineries started making gasoline that was lead free. Lead free gasoline solved the problem of pollutants in the atmosphere and it also gave your vehicle better mileage per gallon. This became the wave of the future for modern cars. Since the catalytic converter conception the market has changed drastically when it comes to engines and how they affect our eco system. Many new things are now available to help with how the engine emits pollutants. The oil refineries took the problem as a serious one as they should and also worked on how gas is made and what is put in the gasoline in order to help the consumer with their vehicle. The catalytic converter is no longer necessary but it did play a very vital part in saving our atmosphere and because of its function showed the refineries and the auto manufacturers that they could make a better and cheaper form of fuel that could run a different type of engine.
