Rental cars can be expensive, or they can be cheap if you know how to get the best deals possible.  Since all rental car companies work in a different way, there are some tips, and tricks that you can use in order to get the best deal on your next rental car transaction.

Name your own price - Priceline has a cool, new feature where you can name your own price.  What you’ll do is tell Priceline what kind of car you want, where you want it, and what time, and you then name your price.  If the price is right, a company will jump on it, and you’ll get the car at that price.  Now, if you name the price too low, you may not get any bids, so you don’t want to be too cheap!

Get your coupon code - Whenever I book my rental car, I will always check for coupon codes before I set out, and make my reservation.  If you’re loyal to a particular car rental company, you may want to check others, just to play it safe.  You may also call up, and see if they match competitor deals.  Now, if you want to find these coupon codes, the process is rather easy.  All you’ll want to do is Google “Company name + coupon codes”, and see what pops up for you in the search.  Use the code, and save.

Look away from the airport – The airport is always going to charge an arm, and leg just based on convenience.  If you look away to another city, you will sooner or later find out that the prices are going to be cheaper.  Sometimes, all you need to do is travel 5 miles away via a taxi, and you save $100.

Book ahead of time - The longer you book ahead, the more likely you’ll get a better deal.  Since most rental car companies want to fill their quota for the day, they will love to give you a great price either late in the game, or even early, because they don’t want to take a gamble.  If you show up at the counter asking for a car, you’ll find that they will know you’re desperate, and charge you based on the fact that you’re desperate for a rental.

Saving on a rental car isn’t hard as you can tell, and as long as you compare, and try coupon codes out, you can save at least 10%, or more.
