Your teenager has just gotten his first car.  It is likely an old, “transportation only” vehicle that will get him and his friends around, and will give you all kinds of opportunity to help him “fix it up”.  While tempting to get him that gas station credit card that he really needs, that 16th birthday is a great opportunity to take advantage of the “new” used car to really impress your teenager with some great, and inexpensive, birthday gifts for the car.

Hub Caps

Many of the older cars, teenage ready, are missing at least one hubcap, and the others are likely not in the best of shape.  A set of wheel covers can be purchased starting at $20.00, depending on the size of the wheels, and the impact on the look of the car will be amazing.  Keep in mind the gender of your teenager.  Although not as important as it will be in a few years, note that some of the wheelcover styles are less masculine than others and select accordingly.  Also, keep the credit card receipt.  As long as still in the boxes, it’s never a problem to return wheelcovers for another set, if you just missed the mark on the style.

Seat Covers

Seat covers are another inexpensive way to really personalize an older car, while covering up some of the wear of the previous owner.  The current market on seat covers has really expanded and includes unique colors and patterns that will be sure to impress, while not killing your budget.  Universal bucket seat covers start at $20.00 each, while bench seat covers start at $35.00.

Floor Mats

Just covering up the wear and tear evidence of previous owners will help your teen feel like the new car is really his.  New floor mats are another inexpensive way to update the condition and color of the interior.  Starting at $12.00 for a set of four universal mats, and also sold as singles, the color range and durability levels are extensive, and will be a dramatic improvement no matter which is selected.

Accessories!

More geared for the teenage girl, the range of matching set accessories for the car are now commonly found in “diva style” colors and patterns.  It’s currently very easy to find a steering wheel cover, keychain and driving gloves in a matching set of hot pink hearts and kisses.  Of course the more conservative and male oriented styles are also available, at the same low prices, but the hot patterns and colors are really a lot of fun.

Considering that your teenager will not be making a permanent status symbol statement with his first car, and that all the suggestions above are easily and inexpensively changeable, this is a great opportunity to let individuality rule.
