Changing your car’s motor oil really isn’t that hard, and it’s going to save yourself a lot of money.  If you’re looking to change your own oil, I wanted to point you to some great articles, as well as some videos that can help you better understand on how the process is done.

The process of changing oil is relatively simple.   You will have to drain your old oil, replace the oil filter, and then you will add the new oil.  Each, and every car is different with how it’s done, but I will do my best to give you the basics.

STEP ONE – Look into your manual

What I would first do is check out your auto manual.  Every car has a manual, and if you can’t find yours, you may want to look for an e-version online, or if you wish, you can purchase an auto manual for your car for a relatively cheap price online.  It’s a great purchase, because you will find that you will learn how to do just about everything with your car.  You will want to make sure that you’re doing everything right.

STEP TWO – What kind of oil should you use?

There are plenty of brands, and types out there.  It’s really up to you on what you want to use.  You can choose between brands such as Valvoline, Quaker State, and others.   Experts will tell you that they will recommend 10w30 in the Winter, and 10w40 in the Summer.

STEP THREE – Start the process

You will want to make sure that your engine is cool.  You will want to shut down your car to ensure that the oil isn’t hot.  The last thing that you want to do is burn your hand.

Jack up your car, so that you can get underneath the hood.  You’re going to want to get down there so that you can drain your oil.

Grab an oil pan, and locate the oil drain plug.  Remove the plug, and proceed to drain the oil into the pan.

When the oil proceeds to stop, you will want to replace the plug as it was before.

The next thing that you will want to do is replace the oil filter.  Again, this is going to vary depending on your make and model.  You will want to make sure that you install the oil filter correctly.  Be sure to check out this oil changing filter video to help you better understand the process.

After all is said and done, you will want to reference your manual again, and see how many quarts of oil that you’re going to have to add.  Add the oil, start up the car to ensure everything is running, and you’re good to go.

Obviously it’s a little harder than that, but it should give you a better idea on where to start.  I highly recommend you reference to your car only to ensure that you complete the process correctly.
