When you’re getting ready to sell your used car for the first time, the number one thing most sellers don’t know what to do is determine the selling price.  Most people have no clue on how much their car is worth and instead of doing the easy research, most sellers fail to either sell the car with a price that’s too high or too low resulting in a loss.  I’m going to go through some steps to show you how you can find the value of your used car:

Step 1:  Go to KBB.com.  The first step we will want to take is to go to KBB.com.  KBB is known in the auto industry as the #1 guide to getting the right value for your car.  This is what most people use in order to get the price they should sell their car at.  Not only can you get a value for what it’s worth, you can also get trade in values and more.

Step 2:  Click on used cars.  The step we want to take next is by clicking on the “used cars” tab up on the top of the screen.  Here, you’re going to get a little box asking you the year, the make, and the model of your vehicle.

Step 3:  Fill out the information.  Click the drop down boxes and select the car you’re looking to get the price for.  After you fill out all of the information, click on the “go” tab.  After you click on the “go” tab, you’re going to get a list asking what kind of value you’re going to want to get.  Some of the selections include:

  • Trade-in value
  • Private seller value
  • Suggested retail value

Step 4:  Pick the value.  Since you’re probably wanting to sell it as a private seller, let’s select the “private seller value” and click the search button.  After you click the search button, they may ask you more questions on more details on the car.  Select the appropriate options and continue.

Step 5:  Select the options.  This part is important, once you reach the options page.  Make sure you know what options your car has because each option can increase the value in the car’s price.  Select all of the options and proceed to continue.

Step 6:  Know the condition.  When you finally select the options, you’re going to be asked what kind of condition the car is in.  Read each detail closely to see what matches up to your car’s condition.  Try and be as honest as possible so that you can get the best rate possible. 

After you select your condition, it will bring you to the pricing screen.  Here, you’re going to get the “private seller value” for each condition.  These are the numbers you should use when you’re looking to sell your car.  Make sure you don’t sell any higher than this because it’s more than likely that you won’t get that much.  Hopefully by now, you have a better understanding of how much your car is actually worth.  Once you’re ready to sell your car, place an ad online or in your local paper and wait for the calls!
