796688_jessieA lot of people just tend to throw their dog into the back seat when going for a car ride.  They aren’t tied down, they roam around the car, and move around as they choose.  Although your dog make like that, it isn’t safe.  We would never let our child or anyone else do that, so why would we let our dogs do that?  If we were to get into an accident and our dog is sitting on the seat, and we slam on the brakes they will really hurt themselves.

Having your dog do as they please in the car is no safe way to carry around your dog.  If you’re looking for tips on how to get your dog to ride well in the car and to ride safely, consider a few of the tips below!

Puppy - First of all, you want to make sure you let your dog ride in the car as soon as they are a puppy.  The younger they get used to it, the more they will like to ride in the car and feel more comfortable and used to it.

Start the car – Now, put them in the car and start the engine.  This loud noise and vibration may scare them for a minute or two, so give them some time to get used to the noises.

Cage – When they’re a puppy or riding in the car for the first few times put them in a cage.  They will feel safer and more secure while riding in this “scary thing.”

Experience – Make sure you create a good atmosphere and good experience when they ride in the car.  When you take them somewhere take them to a park to play, give them plenty of treats and make it fun.  Then they will associate the car rides for something fun.

Avoid eating – Make sure you avoid giving them food and water before you take them in the car.  They may get sick and end up throwing up.  If so, they will not like car rides and will associate them with getting sick.

Bathroom – Let them go to the bathroom before you take them too.  This will avoid any accidents in the car.

Seatbelt – Ok, now for the safety.  Never let your dog roam around the car without being tied down to something.  Simply because they will get hurt and it isn’t safe.  Get your dog a seatbelt for the car.  If you care about your dog you’ll get one.  You wouldn’t let your little one sit in the car without a car seat, so why let your dog?

Letting your dog get used to car rides takes time, training and a lot of safety thinking.  Consider a few of the tips above, and make sure your dog is just as safe as you are in the car!
