Every car needs a title, and if you’ve found that you can’t find it, or you’ve lost it, you may think that you’re out of luck.  Well, this isn’t the case, but you’re going to have to go through some steps in order to get it back.

Contact your local DMV - The first thing that you want to do is contact your local DMV department.  Explain your situation, and tell them that you lost your vehicle title.  They will be able to tell you how to get your title back.  Some DMV’s do this, while others will direct you elsewhere.  This will at least get you on the right path.

What are your options? When you talk with someone on the form, find out how you can get your title back.  In some states, you can do it by mail, while others make you do it in person.  I prefer the mail, or phone, because it will allow you to avoid those nasty long lines at your DMV.

There will always be a fee - Yes, like anything in life, and especially when it deals with the government, you’re going to find that there are going to be fees.  Don’t expect to walk in there, and get your title back for no charge.  You’re going to have to generally dish out a few bucks, no matter where you live.

Fill out the form correctly – When you figure out where to go to get your lost title, you’re going to most likely have to fill out a form.  When you fill out the form, make sure that you fill out everything, as well make sure it’s accurate.  If it isn’t accurate, you will find that it will be rejected.

Just wait – When the form is finally completed, you will have to wait for it to be processed.  This can take up to a few days, depending on your office, and how busy it is.  You can generally call up, and get a status.

When you finally get your title back, make sure you always know where it is.  This should be a valuable lesson, because if you ask anyone that has lost one, they will most likely tell you that they don’t want it to happen again!
