How to save on gas with a RVAny owner of a RV can tell you that they don’t like to look at the gas bill no matter how cheap gas is.  It’s no fun pulling up to the pump and literally pumping hundreds of dollars into your RV that gets next to nothing in terms of miles per gallon.  What if I told you that there are ways to save on gas when you’re filling up?  What if I told you that you can save up to 10% per gallon?  How cool would that be?

If you tend to travel every year via your RV, I would highly recommend that you look into getting a gas credit card.  It has so many advantages that not only can you use it on your RV, you can use it on your personal use as well.  Basically, every time you fill up at the pump, you’re going to save a certain percentage.  This will all depend on what card you apply for and as I said earlier, you’ll probably save anywhere from 1-10%.

Let’s take an example on how much you can truly save when it comes to filling up your RV.

  • Let’s say the cost of gas is $2/gallon and you need 100 gallons.  Your total before your credit card is going to be $200.
  • Let’s now say that you’re going to get 5% off your total bill.  $200 x 5% = a savings of $10 or $190 total.  That’s not too bad, is it?  It’s a lot better than nothing.

Now, when it comes to a gas credit card, there are some things that you should look out for when applying for a card –

Look for caps:  Some card companies will only allow you to get a certain amount back each month.  Some do it, while others don’t.  I would recommend that you look into getting a card that doesn’t offer a cap.

Look at the long term rate:  A lot of card companies will offer an intro rate.  I would make sure that you look past the intro rate and what they are going to offer in the long term.  For example, they may offer 10% for the first 60 days but only 5% after.

Where can it be used?  Some cards can only be used at particular stations while others can be used all over.   If you get one for a specific location, make sure they are all over the place so that you can take advantage of the discount.  I prefer cards that are accepted everywhere but it really doesn’t matter.

The last note I would like to mention is that you should pay your card off in full each month to take full advantage.  If you don’t pay your card off in full, you’ll see interest charges, which you don’t want.  Instead, make it a habit to pay it off in full.

With so many cards out there, find one that suits your needs.  Every fill up over time is going to save you a lot of money.  Savings really do add up if you use it right!
