With today’s technology, selling a car in today’s world is easier than ever.  Unlike the older days, you have to place an ad in a newspaper with no pictures, hoping that someone would call you or you would simply place your car on the side of a street with a for sale sign on it.  Now, with millions of people online, it isn’t hard to sell a car, if it’s set at the right price.

The best place in my opinion to sell a car is on eBay.  With eBay, you’re able to reach the whole world on a website that caters to millions of users.  Not only can you target local buyers, you can target buyers from thousands of miles away.  If you plan on selling your car on eBay, you’re going to want to make sure your listings are right.  If it isn’t , you may not get the right price for your car.

Find out the value of your car.  First things are first.  Before you even sell your car, make sure you know what it’s worth.  You won’t want to put up a car that has a high price.  I wrote a post a while back that will show you exactly how to get the value of your car.

Start taking pictures.  Once you find out how much your car is worth, start taking pictures of the car.  The more pictures you take, the merrier.  A car purchase is going to be a big one for the buyer and if they can’t check out the car in person, they want to see as many pictures as possible.  Here’s a checklist of what you should take pictures of on your car in order to be successful on eBay motors –

  • The engine
  • The outside of the car from each angle (front, right side, left side, back)
  • Inside the trunk
  • The dashboard
  • The center console
  • Front Seat
  • Back Seat

If you can at least take pictures of these things, you’ll increase your chances of selling the car.

Create a video.  If you want to be different, you may want to create a video of the car on youtube.com.  You can make a video of yourself starting the car or showing a few things such as the lights coming on, the four-ways coming, blinkers, and anything else you can think of.  A video will help you sell it as well.

Show the mileage.  When you’re taking pictures of your car, make sure the car is up and running.  Take a picture of the odometer to show the actual mileage.  Buyers love to see the mileage, so make sure that is there as well.

Write a description.  Here comes the hard part.  When you’re writing your description, you’re going to want to be as descriptive as possible.  You’re going to wnat to list all of the features.  List everything you can think of from air conditioning to anti-lock brakes.  Everything counts!  Besides writing about the good things, don’t be afraid to list the bad.  A buyer will want to know everything.  If it’s been in an accident and it’s been to the collision shop, let them know!  I’d rather buy from an honest buyer instead of a liar.

List your terms.  Let the buyer know how they can buy from you.  Whether it’s a cashier check or 10% down via an escrow, let the buyer know what you’ll accept when they bid.

Know your format.  Once you’re ready to sell, know what kind of format you want to sell with.  You can either do a fixed price where they have to accept your price.  I recommend if you go this route, you go through a place like AutoTrader.com or you can do the auction route.  This is the best way to do it.  Set a price and let the buyer determine the price.

eBay is a great way to sell your car.  If you follow these tips, you’ll defintely increase your odds of selling your car.  Good luck!
