If you’re in the hunt for a new or used car of you might plan on buying one in the future, everyone loves to save money and while the dealership is trying to make as much money as possible, there are shady tatics that they use that you should know about.  If you know the dealer’s game, you’ll get a  better deal.  I’m going to show you what you shouldn’t tell a car salesman.

Be dull – When you’re out looking for that new car, never show the salesman that you love it or hate it.  In fact, keep him guessing.  If he knows you love the car, he’s going to try to upsell and push that car and make you feel bad.  I know we all find that car we like but if we can hold our emotions to ourselves, this will only help in the process.

Keep money to yourself – A car salesman is always going to ask you what you can afford and when he asks this, just tell him that it all depends on the situation or make up some excuse where you don’t give figures.  The minute you tell him that you can afford $xxx/month, he’s going to make your payment that.  My trick is to tell them that what you can afford is free or you lie and say you want to pay in cash and monthly payments aren’t on your mind right now, this always works!

Never trade-in your car – Never ever trade in your car at the dealership.  I know it’ll sound like a good deal at the time but there are easier ways to sell your own car and get the most money for it.  Remember, the dealership has to turn around and make a profit on it.  The best thing to do is simply tell them you have no trade in and you’re just looking to buy today.  When the dealer wants a trade in, they tend to give you an awful value.

Be patient – Never sound desperate when you’re trying to buy your car.  Even if you need the car within a few days, don’t let the salesman know this.  Always be coy about your purchase and let them know that you’re in no hurry.  If he gets the sense that you need the car right now, he’s going to push it and give you “fake” deals.  You don’t want to buy into this non-sense.

In the long run, salesman are not your friend.  They want to come off as that guy that has known you forever.  He’s going to tell you cute and witty stories but in the long run, tehy are there to feed their family and not learn about your favorite pastime.  Think of the salesperson as an object after your cash and your goal is to give him as little of it as you can.
