How Do I Save On
Gas?
by: Tom Tessin
Besides
applying for a gas credit card, there are many ways to save on gasoline
when it comes down to driving. As we have all found out by now, high
gas prices can put a damper on your budget. With gas prices in the
$3 range sometimes, a car that provides a 12-gallon tank will cost
you $30 plus!
Below is a list
of ways you can save on gas –
The
fast you drive, the more fuel you use
This point is simple,
the faster you drive, the more gasoline your car is going to use.
It’s always important to stay within the speed limit. Why go
70 mph in a 45 mph zone when you’re going to constantly stop?
Use
cruise control
If you tend to
drive the highways a lot, use your cruise control. This ensures that
your car maintains a constant speed. If you don’t use the cruise
control, drivers tend not to keep a constant speed.
Avoid
idling
If you don’t
need to idle your car, turn it off. This means turning it off while
you run into the house, office, etc. Every second burns that gas.
So if you turn off the car for even two minutes, it saves a little!
Keep
your tires inflated
Make sure that
you check your tire pressure every so often. This ensures that your
car gets the maximum gas mileage. Studies have found that under inflated
tires can cut gas mileage by six percent.
These are just
a few tips that you can use to improve your gas mileage. Please keep
in mind that there are many other ways to save on gas mileage. Also
keep in mind that the government will not endorse any gas saving type
product. So the next time you see a product in the store that says,
“get better gas mileage” with this product, chances are
that it doesn’t work. The EPA has tested many products similar
to these and has found that none have made an impact. The money you
spend toward these products could have been an extra gallon in your
tank!
Besides
the main points made above, it’s also smart to keep in mind
that when it comes down to buying a car that you check out what exactly
it gets per gallon. If you’re going to buy a Hummer and then
go on to complain about how bad the gas mileage is, it’s your
own fault! If you’re looking to not fill up as much, then it’s
best to get a fuel efficient vehicle such as a Honda Civic or Toyota
Carolla.
