Hybrid Vehicles - Do They Really Save You Gas?
by: FINDgascards.com Staff
Ever since gas prices recently soared, people have been scrambling to find ways to save money and still reach their destination. This is especially true if they were one of the millions that had bought SUV’s as the country went large-vehicle crazy for a while. Those high prices at the pump made everyone re-evaluate just what we were driving and how much it was costing us.
For a lot of drivers, the answer to the high-gas-price problem was found in a hybrid vehicle. They shelled out the extra money at the dealership in order to save long-term at the pump. Many of the people that did this also appreciated the better environmental record for which hybrid vehicles are known. It seemed like a win-win situation, but do hybrid vehicles really save you money on gas?
According to Consumer Reports, hybrid vehicles do indeed save you gas. While traditional vehicles run only by using gas, hybrids use a combination of gasoline and batteries. Taking some of the demand for gas, and placing it on that of a battery, will end up saving you gas.
However, even though it has been designed as and touted to be a vehicle that will save you gas, many hybrid shortcomings are still cited and debated. For starters, many people believe that the hybrid gas mileage is not as good as the manufacture claims.
There are other areas of debate regarding hybrid vehicles, which include:
• The large selling price when you go to buy one. A hybrid usually costs thousands of dollars more than a non-hybrid version. Therefore, you have to do a lot of saving over the lifetime of the vehicle to make up for that added expense.
• We don’t yet know how being a hybrid will impact the vehicle’s long-term re-sale and depreciation values. Some believe it improves the value, long-term, while others argue the opposite because it could be more costly to make repairs to hybrids.
• Recently, an environmental issue has been raised about hybrids, which are supposed to be “greener” vehicles. Turns out, according to the LA Times, rare-earth metals are used in the making of hybrid components; mining them in places that are not environmentally friendly, and supplies may be getting smaller.
The bottom line, when it comes to saving money with hybrid vehicles, is that most analysts feel that they do save you money in the long run. However, in order to reach that point, you will have to take a chance by putting out more money, up front. However, whether you save money eventually or not, you can at least take pleasure in knowing that you did something for the betterment of the planet.
