Pitfalls of the Gas Card
by: FINDgascards.com

There is no doubt about it, the gas card has been able to save many people untold amount amounts of money on their gasoline purchases.  While many people are saving and looking into gas cards for the first time there are those that have found out if you are not carefully gas cards can mean trouble.  While the majority of people find that these cards are a godsend, there are others that have found that as perfect as they seem there are some pitfalls associated with them.

The most common problem that people have with these cards is that they didn’t do enough research to make the card worth their while.  For instance, many people overlook the importance of looking at what gas stations the card can be used at or looking to see how much of a rebate they were offered at these gas stations.  Many people assume that they are going to have their gas mostly paid for, and while gas cards can definitely help you recoup some of what you are paying in gasoline, you are still going to be paying for your gas.  It’s important to understand what you are getting from a gas card before you use it so you are surprised later when you receive your bill!

Another problem that a lot of people find with gas cards is that they are not only gas cards but they are also credit cards.  What happens to a lot of people is that they apply for and get the card to help them save on gas and they end up using the card for other purchases so much that they exceed their limit and they cannot buy their gas with the card, and therefore they cannot take advantage of the rebates.  If you get a gas card it is a good idea to only use it for gas instead of using it for other purchases so you know that every time you pull up to the pump you can take advantage of the savings.

There is one more common pitfall of these cards and that is that people forget to look at the interest rates associated with the purchases.  If you have a gas card it is just like a credit card, and therefore you are paying interest on anything that you purchase with it.  Many people get excited at the idea that they have a card that has 6% rebates but they don’t stop to consider that the card also has a 29% annual percentage rate, which basically undoes the rebate.  Many end up finding out too late that they would have been better with a 3% rebate card that has a 12% annual percentage rate.

As you can see, these are all pitfalls that can be avoided by simply doing a little bit of research and knowing what you are getting when you get a gas card.  If you shop around and you ensure that you choose a gas card that fits your needs and you will likely avoid all of these pitfalls and find that your gas card is a great way to save money on all of your gas purchases.
