Pros and Cons with
Hybrid Vehicles
by: Tom Tessin
When
it comes to driving, everyone wants to save money, especially when
it comes to gas. When consumers search for vehicles, they sometimes
start to venture in the hybrid area. While a hybrid can be great for
fuel efficiency, it can also have many downsides too.
Hybrids
have started to pop up more and more on the highway as they become
more affordable for the consumer. A lot of the times, you may not
even notice a hybrid on the road because they are very similar to
a regular vehicle.
If you’re
interested in purchasing a hybrid vehicle, it’s always safe
to view both the pros and the cons. Even though the pros outweigh
the cons, it’s helpful to browse both sides just to make sure
you want to make a big purchase.
PROS
- Many
states will offer you a purchase incentive when it comes to buying
a hybrid vehicle.
- When
it comes to tax time, if you own a hybrid vehicle, you will receive
a tax break. In 2004, this credit was $1,500.
- A hybrid
is identical to the car you drive now. You don’t need to learn
anything new. You just drive like any other day.
- The
mileage on a hybrid is usually 8-10% higher than it’s non-hybrid
version. A lot of versions such as a Honda Civic offer a Hybrid
and standard version.
- Some
states offer a hybrid HOV lane. This is a lane designated solely
for hybrid vehicles. This is a great way to fight traffic in the
morning.
CONS
- A hybrid
vehicle is usually more than a standard version. This can range
anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000 more.
- Car
parts for a hybrid usually tend to be a little bit more. Since hybrids
are still fairly new to the market, the parts are usually harder
to come by.
- Acceleration
on all hybrids are usually slower than the standard version. If
you’re not a speed demon, then this shouldn’t be a problem.
As you can see, the pros still outweigh the cons. A hybrid benefits
in every way and no one will ever frown upon you when you make the
purchase. Not only are you helping by using less fuel cells; you’re
also doing better for the economy.
As time
goes on like usual and hybrids become a household name, the parts
will be more readily accessible. This will drive the price down for
parts putting even more money in your pocket. Not only will parts
be more readily accessible, the cost of hybrid will also drop. Like
anything new, the price is always the highest at the beginning. Once
you give it time, the price will slowly drop.
If you
do a lot of driving and you want to save on gas, we would highly recommend
a hybrid vehicle. Every state has different benefits, like we mentioned
in the pro section. The cons we wouldn’t worry about so much
because as we stated above, the more time you give it, the better
the car will become. Just remember, not only does a hybrid save you
money, it helps the environment!
